Sukku Coffee or Sukku Malli Coffee has a lot of health benefits and very soothing to drink. It is one of the popular drinks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Sukku Kaapi can be made with milk or without milk though the most commonly made sukku coffee is just with water and a mild sweetener.
About Sukku Coffee
Sukku Coffee is a traditional Indian beverage made using dried ginger, coriander seeds, pepper, cardamom etc. ‘Sukku’ means dry ginger and ‘Coffee’ is a beverage so sukku coffee is a beverage made using Indian spices. The spices are first dry roasted and made into a powder which can be stored and used. This powder is added to water boiled well and finally served with sweetener. The sweetener used is mostly palm jaggery or palm sugar candy. The first time I tasted sukku coffee was in my yoga class. Years back when I joined yoga class they use to serve this sukku coffee almost daily after the class. The first time I had I felt it spicy but after few days I started loving it.

Sukku Coffee Ingredients
Dry Ginger – Dry ginger is easily available in stores, you can use it. Dry ginger powder is also available, you can use that too. Coriander Seeds – Coriander seeds is added for flavor. Black Pepper – Black pepper is added which makes the drink mildly hot. Cardamom – Cardamom is added for flavor. Sweetener – Palm jaggery or palm sugar candy can be used. I usually use palm sugar candy as it is one of the best remedy for cold and cough.
How to make Sukku Coffee Step by Step
To prepare sukku coffee powder
1.Take 1 cup dried ginger(sukku), First rinse it well and dry it. Then peel the skin and discard. 2.Using a mortar and pestle roughly crush it and set aside. 3.To a pan add 1/2 cup coriander seeds, 1 tablespoon black pepper and 6 cardamom. 4.Dry roast it well until golden, nice aroma comes. Dry roast in low medium flame, do not burn the spices. 5.Add the dry ginger. 6.Give a quick saute then switch off. 8.Cool down completely then transfer to a mixer jar. 9.Grind it to a fine powder. Cool down then store in an airtight container.
To prepare sukku coffee (without milk)
10.To a sauce pan add 1 cup water to it along with 1 teaspoon prepared sukku coffee powder, 1 tablespoon palm sugar candy. You can adjust sweetness according to your preference. Mix it well first. 11.Boil well for 2 minutes in medium flame then switch off. 12.Transfer it to a strainer, strain and discard the remains. 13.Pour into serving glass and serve hot!
To prepare sukku coffee (with milk)
14.Add 1/2 cup milk to a sauce pan, 1/2 cup water, 1 teaspoon sukku coffee powder. Mix it well first. 15.Let it come to a rolling boil, simmer for a minute then switch off. 16.Now add 1 tablespoon palm sugar candy. 17.Transfer it to a strainer, strain and discard the remains. 18.Pour into serving glass and serve hot! 19.Sukku coffee is ready!
Expert Tips
If you feel its is little spicy, then add 3/4 teaspoon for 1 cup water. Usually sukku coffee is made only with water, but if you prefer you can have it with half and half milk, water. You can store the homemade sukku coffee powder up to 2-3 months. Karupatti(palm jaggery) or panangkarkandu (pal sugar candy) can be used as a sweetener.If you like you can have it without sweetener too.
Serving & Storage
Store the prepared sukku coffee powder in room temperature and it keeps well for 2 months, you can store in fridge to extend shelf life. Sukku Coffee is best when served hot.
1.Is Sukku coffee good for cold and cough?
Yes it is very good for cold and cough as sukku or dry ginger has a lot of medicinal values. If having for cold / cough make it in plain water and drink it.
2.Will it be too spicy to drink?
