Oats Dosa Recipe Step by Step
Prepare Oat Flour
2.Grind it few times to get a slightly coarse flour. Oat flour ready, Set aside.
Prepare batter
3.To a mixing bowl add oats flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, 1/4 cup rava. 4.Add 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1/4 cup onion, 1 tablespoon curry leaves, 1 no green chilli and 1/2 teaspoon ginger all finely chopped along with reuqired salt. 5.Give a quick whisk. 6.Add water little by little to form runny batter. It takes around 3 cups of water(approximately) but make sure to add little by little – do not add fully. 7.Form a runny batter. 8.Mix well. If you feel the batter is thick, add little more water. Now Oats Dosa batter is ready.
Preparing Dosa Tawa
9.Heat dosa tawa – check by sprinkling water, it should sizzle really fast. Wipe off with a cloth. If dosa tawa is not really hot you will not be able to get holes while pouring which will not yield lacy crispy dosas. So check the tawa by sprinkling water and also to adjust heat. I recommend using cast iron dosa tawa for best results if not you can use regular iron tawa too. 10.Always mix from bottom before pouring dosa as flour gets settled at the bottom. So make sure to mix well and adjust consistency by adding water if the batter gets thick. The batter should be runny just like we make for rava dosa.
Preparing Dosa
11.Now start pouring the batter starting from the edges and finishing in the center. Fill in the bigger holes by pouring the batter. 12.Drizzle oil at the edges and center. Let it cook in medium flame. 13.Cook until golden and the edges start to lift by itself as you can see. 14.You can either fold as such and serve or flip and cook too. As the dosas are lacy and thin flipping and cooking to other side is not a must. Crispy lacy oats dosa ready to serve! Serve hot with your favorite chutney and idli podi.
Expert Tips
Just drizzle only a thin layer of the batter dont spread it , else you will not get crispy dosas. Make your batter very thin so that pouring is easy enough. If you feel the batter is thick add little more water. If the batter becomes very runny add 1-2 tablespoon rice flour and adjust it. You can powder oats and store it in advance so that its very helpful during our morning hurry burries. Always mix the batter before pouring so that flour that has settled down will mix thoroughly.
Storing & Serving Suggestion
You can store the prepared batter for 2 days in fridge. I usually make the batter for breakfast / dinner, store the leftover batter in fridge and use it the next day. Oats Dosa goes well with Sambar, Chutney, Idli Podi etc.
Variations
This Oats Dosa Recipe works best but I have tried few variations which works well too:
Try replacing 1/4 cup sooji with 1/8 cup sooji and 1/8 cup wheat flour For 1 cup oats you can try with 1/4 cup rice flour and 1/4 cup wheat flour with 1 tablespoon sooji too but the texture varies. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and 1/2 teaspoon whole pepper if you prefer. You can add 1/2 cup thick curd and add water to make the batter.
1.Why is my Oats Dosa sticking to tawa?
It means your tawa is not seasoned properly. You can check dosa tawa seasoning here. For quick tawa seasoning.
Heat the dosa tawa add 1 teaspoon oil along with salt spread it over the tawa then remove it. Now make dosas. Heat the dosa tawa add 1 teaspoon of oil break and add 2 red chillies, spread the chillies so that it touches all over the pan, cook for a minute, then remove it. Now make dosas
2.What type of Oats to use for Oats Dosa?
You can use either rolled oats or quick cooking oats. But make sure to first pulse it to make it slightly coarse to make oats flour then use it.
3.Why is my Oats Dosa not crispy?

4.I don’t see any holes while pouring the batter. Why?
It means the tawa is not properly heated. So heat and check by sprinkling water if it sizzles fast then the tawa is ready. Anotehr reason may be if the batter is not in the right consistency holes might not come while pouring. So adjust batter consistency and try again.
