Oatmeal Cookies Ingredients

Rolled Oats – Old fashioned oats or Rolled oats is best to be used for this recipe. However you can use quick cooking oats too but watch on the baking time. Flour – Regular white flour or maida is used. You can replace it with wheat flour for a healthy alternate. Butter – I used homemade butter. You can use store bought butter too but make sure butter used is at room temperature. Sugar – White sugar and brown sugar is used for this recipe. Egg – Egg enhances the flavor and texture of the cookies. Rising agent – Baking soda is used which makes the cookies soft. Salt – Salt lifts the sweetness of the cookies.

How to make Oatmeal Cookies Step by Step

1.To a bowl add 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt. 2.Whisk it well for even mixing. You can even sieve it alternatively. 3.Preheat oven at 180 deg C for 10 minutes. To a mixing bowl add 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup castor sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar. Make sure butter is at room temperature. 4.Whisk well until creamy. 5.Add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence. Make sure egg is at room temperature. 6.Whisk well until creamy and smooth. 7.Add flour mix. 8.Add 1 and 1/2 cups rolled oats. 9.Mix it using a spatula until combined. The dough is sticky, you can chill the dough for 30 minutes to make the cookies spread less. 10.Using a cookie scooper scoop out, you can even use 1 tablespoon measure to scoop out if you don’t have cookie scoop. 11.Scoop out the dough on parchment paper laid on the baking tray. 12.Leave enough space as the cookies will spread. I baked in 2 batches. 13.Bake at 190 deg C for 8-10 minutes or until the edges start to turn golden brown. Soft chewy oatmeal cookies are ready!

Expert Tips

Adding a mix of white sugar and brown sugar gives perfect texture to the cookies. The cookie dough is sticky. If you don’t want the cookies to spread much then chill the dough for 30 minutes and then bake. I baked it immediately and it spread as you can see. Do not over bake, 8 -10 minutes when it starts to turn golden turn off. You may feel the sweetness a bit high the moment you taste it, give some testing time of minimum 2 hours and they are perfect. I got around 18 bite sized cookies. You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. Using castor sugar makes it easy to blend and dissolve. However you can use granulated sugar too.

Serving & Storage

Oats cookies keeps well in room temperature for 3 days if stored in an airtight container. However you can freeze the unbaked cookie dough for up to 3 months. When you need to bake, thaw the dough then proceed with the process.

1.Can I use instant oats?

Yes you can use quick cooking oats or oat flakes which will work for this recipe but keep an eye on the baking time as it make take few minutes less.

2.What can I replace flour / maida with?

Maida can be replaced with wheat flour for a healthy alternate. I have tried this recipe with wheat flour and it works great.
