About Neer Mor

Neer Mor is a watery spiced buttermilk made using fresh thick curd along with green chillies, cumin seeds, ginger, curry leaves and coriander leaves. Neer in tamil translates to water and Mor is buttermilk so Neer Mor literally translates to watery buttermilk. I love buttermilk either the traditional creamier version which is the liquid left after churning the butter from cream collected from milk or this Neer Mor. Neer Mor is known as Neer mor in tamil , Sambharam in Malayalam and Chaas in Hindi. Though each version has a slight variation each one has a unique taste. Neer Mor is a very common drink in South India especially during summers. This is the best way to beat the summer especially a good healthy alternate to the aerated / soft drinks. Panakam, Vada Pappu, Kosambari and Neer Mor are made and served as neiveidyam for Sri Rama Navami. It is made in temples then distributed among the devotees.
