About Coconut Ladoo

Coconut Ladoo is a instant ladoo variety made using desiccated coconut, condensed milk, ghee and cardamom powder. It is a very quick instant version ladoo that can be made in just 10 mins. Coconut Ladoo is one of the recipes that kindles my childhood memories. I remember my perimma making this laddu after seeing the recipe from milkmaid booklet and it was so delicious. She made it using fresh coconut as those days desiccated coconut was not available. I usually make this with fresh or desiccated coconut as per the availability. Ladoos made using desiccated coconut has more shelf life and tastes delicious. Condensed milk is a versatile ingredient as there are so many delicious recipes made using it.

I made this Coconut Ladoo when SIL’s family visited us and when I was nearing my due. I was craving for sweets throughout my 2nd pregnancy and I was expecting a girl and almost named her only to know later that it was a boy. Craving for sweets and its a girl is surely a myth. Because when I had mittu in me I had such aversion to sweets and it was a girl so its all old school tales I guess. Whatever kids are gods blessing no matter if its a girl or a boy right?! I have tried the same recipe fresh coconut and it tastes delicious too. If using fresh coconut it needs to be sauteed well to increase shelf life. It is so moist and juicy inside, cooking for a long time makes it dry so keep an eye.

Coconut Ladoo Ingredients

Desiccated coconut – This ladoo can be made using desiccated coconut or even fresh coconut. If using fresh coconut just pulse it in mixer and then use it. Condensed milk – Condensed milk or popularly known as milkmaid is used for sweetness and binding. Cardamom powder – Cardamom powder is added for flavor. Ghee – Ghee is added for flavor and greasing.

Different ways to make Coconut Ladoo

Dessicated coconut with condensed milk – This is the method I have shared here. Fresh coconut with jaggery – Roast fresh coconut for few mins then add powdered jaggery to it and cook until it becomes thick like dough in consistency. Add cardamom powder to it. Cool down then add shape into ladoos. For 1 cup fresh coconut add 1/3 cup powdered jaggery and a pinch of cardamom powder. Fresh coconut with milk and sugar – Mix everything together and cook until it becomes thick. For 1 cup fresh coconut add 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup milk.

How to make Coconut Ladoo Step by Step

1.First add 1 teaspoon ghee. Heat it up. 2.To begin with measure 1 cup desiccated coconut and add it to the pan. 3.Saute for 2 minutes in low medium flame. No need to check for color change but keep sauteing else it will burn at the bottom. 4.Add 1/2 cup condensed milk to it. 5.Cook in low flame till it comes together. Do not scrap the bottom too much. Cook until it forms a mass. 6.Now add 1 teaspoon ghee. 7.Mix it well then add 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder. 8.Mix it well, cook for few seconds and switch off. 7.Now remove the pan, transfer to a plate. Once it is warm knead it once. 8.Shape into small lemon sized balls. Press tightly to shape first.Then using both your palms, roll to make it smooth. Repeat to finish. 9.Add 1/4 cup desiccated coconut to a bowl. Roll the ladoos in desiccated coconut. Repeat to finish. 10.Finally place them in mini cupcake liners and let it to set. Coconut ladoo is ready! Enjoy coconut ladoos!

Expert Tips

If you are using fresh coconut then roast until moisture leaves then add condensed milk. I have not included nuts you can add chopped nuts either raw or ghee fried to the mixture then roll into balls. While rolling if it sticks grease your palms, fingers with ghee then roll. Ghee adds flavor to the ladoos and also avoids sticking. Finally rolling the ladoo in desiccated coconut is optional, you can skip it too. Ladoos made with condensed milk has more shelf life. If you are using fresh coconut then the measure of condensed milk may slightly vary so plus or minus accordingly. Do not overcook just switch off once everything comes together. Else the ladoos will turn hard and loose the melt in the mouth texture. Do not scrap the bottom as the brown part may mix into the mixture. You can use fresh grated coconut. Make sure to pulse it in mixer to make it slightly fine.

Serving & Storage

Coconut Ladoo keeps well in room temperature for 3-5 days. You can store in fridge for 10 days. I wouldn’t recommend freezing it.

1.What can I replace condensed milk with?

You can evaporated milk and sugar to replace condensed milk but the taste surely will differ. Instead you can even add mawa with sugar which would a great alternate to condensed milk.

2.Can I use fresh coconut?

Yes you can use fresh coconut but make sure to roast it in ghee until moisture leaves then add condensed milk and proceed accordingly.

3.I am not able to shape the ladoos?

If the mixture is sticky or still goey cook for few more minutes, cool down for a while and shape them when the mixture is still warm.
