Chilli Potato is a delicious snack or appetizer that includes crispy fried potatoes tossed in a flavorful sauce. Chilli Potato can be served as a starter or snack or even as a side dish for fried rice. It is also called as Aloo Chilli or Chilli Aloo. The preparation of chilli potato involves deep-frying batter coated potatoes until they are golden and crisp this is the first step. Then a sauce is prepared using a mix of ingredients including garlic, ginger, soy sauce, chili sauce, tomato ketchup, vinegar, and sometimes other seasonings. Finally the fried potatoes are coated in this sauce, garnished with spring onion and served hot! This dish serves as a great accompaniment with fried rice, noodles etc. As I always say Chinese dishes takes time for preparation but cooking time is very less as it involves flash cooking in medium high flame.

Chilli Potato(Chilli Aloo) and Honey Chilli Potato

The main difference between Chilli Potato and Honey Chilli Potato is that sesame seeds and honey are added in addition in Honey Chilli Potato.

Chilli Potato Ingredients

Potato – Choose medium sized potatoes. Rinse it well and then peel off the skin. You can use regular Indian potatoes or russet potatoes or even baby potatoes for this recipe. Flour – Cornflour and rice flour is used for making the batter. You can replace rice flour with maida too. Sauces – Soya sauce, chilli Sauce and tomato Sauce is used. You can replace Chilli sauce with schezwan sauce too. Vegetables – Ginger, garlic, onion and capsicum are used. Spring onion gives a great flavor to this dish. Spice powders – Pepper powder is used.

How to make Chilli Potato Step by Step

1.Rinse potatoes well, peel off the skin. Slice them first. I used 4 medium sized potatoes. 2.Cut into long strips like this. Repeat to finish. 3.Keep it immersed in water until use. 4.Boil 3 cups water, when it starts to boil add salt to taste along with drained potatoes. Cook for around 3-5 minutes. 5.Strain and remove the potatoes. Spread it on a plate and set aside to cool. 6.To a mixing bowl add 1/4 cup rice flour, 1/4 cup cornflour along with salt to taste, 1/4 teaspoon pepper powder. Add little water. 7.Mix well to form a slightly thick batter like this. 8.Add few potato pieces and coat with the batter. Add in batches and coat with batter. 9.Add to preheated oil and fry until golden brown. While frying if it sticks, gently break it else you can break it after frying also. Repeat to finish. 10.Heat 1 tablespoon oil add 1 tablespoon garlic, 1 teaspoon ginger and 1 long green chilli. Saute until golden. 11.Add 1/2 cup onion and 1/2 cup capsicum. 12.Give a quick saute in medium high flame. Then add 1 teaspoon soya sauce, 1.5 teaspoon chilli sauce, 2 to 3 tablespoon tomato sauce, salt to taste and 1/2 teaspoon pepper powder. Finally add 1 teaspoon cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoon water. 13.Give a quick mix then add 1/4 cup water to it. 14.Give a quick mix and let it boil for a minute. 15.Add fried potatoes. 16.Give a quick toss until the sauce coats the potatoes well. Finally add 1 tablespoon spring onion, 1 teaspoon vinegar, give a quick mix and switch off. Serve hot!

1.After the final step of coating the sauce with fried potatoes switch off the stove then 2 tablespoon honey along with 2 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds. 2.Give a quick mix and your honey chilli potato is ready to serve! Serve with a generous sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and spring onion.

Expert Tips

Don’t skip green chillies, I finely sliced it so that it doesn’t come in mouth while eating. I deep fried the potatoes for making it crisp. You can pan fry the potatoes too. This is medium spicy, adjust schezwan / chilli sauce according to your spice level preference. The consistency is purely your choice, you can make it saucy like how I have did or make it dry too. Always serve hot as it may turn soggy when resting time is given. Adding cornflour water mixture is purely optional – this is just to make the sauce thick. Don’t add more soya sauce than the mentioned amount else it will change the taste and make the dish more darker in color.

Serving & Storage

Chilli Potato can be has as such as a starter or appetizer or snack, however fried rice or noodles can be served with it. Chilli Potato is best when had hot, so I would not recommend to store. The crispness will be retained only for few hours after that it will become soggy, so make and consume it fresh for best taste.
